SmartPhones--Android, iPhone, etc.--are today's jack-of-all-trade. They serve as your phone, your camera, and a computer in your pocket. Most of us have collected quite a few old SmartPhones in our closets. Maybe it's time to put them to good use. Now, you can use them as a red dot sight on your airsoft gun (see photo below).
In this article we will show you where to get the mounting bracket for your SmartPhone, how to mount your SmartPhone onto your airsoft gun, and what software can turn your SmartPhone into a red dot sight.
There are four basic parts you need to turn your SmartPhone into a red dot sight:
By now, you should have an airsoft gun, which is why you'd want to use the SmartPhone as a red dot sight. Your airsoft gun needs to have Picatinny rails to mount the SmartPhone. If not, there are ways to install Picatinny rails onto your bare gun. That's an article all on its own. Search this web site or ask specific questions in our forum and we will help you.
Next you need a SmartPhone. You'll need an Android or an iPhone. Both SmartPhone has a number of red dot sight apps (software) on the market for you to download and install. However, different SmartPhones may have different screen characteristics. Some SmartPhones works better in the sunlight. If you have several spare SmartPhones, try each one during the day to see which one works best.
There are several brands of SmartPhone Picatinny mounting brackets on the market. Most of the mounting bracket are geared toward a particular SmartPhone. And they could be outrageously expensive. But one company--Airsoft3D--has created a generic "SmartPhone Picatinny Mount" (see photo below). It is useable on virtually all SmartPhones. And it's far less expensive than the competition (less than $20). In this article, we will show you how to use this mount to attach your spare SmartPhone onto your gun.
There are several Android apps and iPhone apps that could turn your SmartPhone into a red dot sight. Search for "inteliSCOPE", "iSightsPro", and "Red Dot Sight" on the various market places. Try them all and use the one that is most suitable for your needs.
The Airsoft3D SmartPhone Picatinny Bracket is generic for almost all SmartPhone with a flat back surface. Many Android phones and the iPhones all have a flat back for attaching this bracket. You can glue the SmartPhone Picatinny Bracket directly to the back of your SmartPhone. But in this article, we'd prefer to use Velcro tapes for a less permanent solution.
Cut a piece of Velcro tape that is just big enough for the flat surface of the Airsoft3D SmartPhone Picatinny Bracket. Then firmly press it onto the bracket as shown in the photo below.
Now cut an equally large Velcro tape and press it to the back of the SmartPhone. We prefer the hairy Velcro side on the bracket and the hook Velcro side on the SmartPhone. Once you've done that, you can now attach the SmartPhone to the Picatinny bracket as shown in the photo below.
Installing the Airsoft3D SmartPhone Picatinny Bracket to the airsoft gun is pretty straightforward like any other Picatinny accessory. Slide the bracket onto the Picatinny rail. Then use a #6-32x1-1/4" screw and a #6-32 nut to fasten it down (see photo below).
Download red dot sight apps on various markets and try the out. Take your airsoft gun to your backyard or a range and sight the SmartPhone to the market. See which red dot sight app works the best for you. Then have fun shooting your enemy players!
