The M16 platform has came a long way. Even with numerous improvements to give it today's M4 variant, it still has numerous old school traits. One old fashioned trait is the magazine release button on the right side. It's in an excellent position for right handed use, but is not easy to use when transition to the left hand. However, did you know you can easily modify it so that it can be used in both hands?
In this article, we will show you the part you need to make your M4 airsoft gun ambidextrous. We will provide step-by-step instruction to help you remove your existing magazine latch. Then we will provide step-by-step instruction to install the ambidextrous magazine catch.
Photo below shows two M4 magazine latches. The one on the left is the standard M4 magazine release. The one on the right is the ambidextrous one that you need to get for this modification. As you can see in the photo, the additional hinge allows you to press the release on the left side to release the magazine.
The part you need is the Airsoft D-Boys Multi Magazine Catch for M4/M16 Series. It costs about $12, which is a pretty decent price to improve the ergonomic of your primary airsoft weapon.
The magazine catch and be removed and installed without removing any other parts on the airsoft gun. The magazine catch is only fastened onto the airsoft gun by a single screw on the push button (see photo below).
Once you unscrewed the button, you can carefully remove it. There is a spring below the button. Be careful removing that as well.
Once the button has been removed, the latch will drop out from the gun on the other side. Screw all the pieces back together and store it in a safe place for future use.
If you are mechanically inclined, then you probably already know that installation is the reverse of removal. But we'll provide the instruction here anyway.
Disassemble all of the pieces from the ambidextrous part. But don't remove the hinge pin. Insert the latch on the left side of the M4. Carefully drop the spring into the latch release button cut-out. Place the button on top of the spring. Then screw it down. Now you have just installed the ambidextrous magazine catch on your M4 airsoft gun.
