Red or blue/green light does not destroy your natural night vision as readily as white light.
The rule of thumb is to use a red light in the outdoors to avoid destroying your NV and prevent the enemy from spotting you easily. Then switch to white light for building/room cleaning. After securing an indoor location, wait 5 minutes to 45 minutes to recover NV.
Instead of getting a red only flashlight, you can also pick up some red gels (transparent sheets) at craft stores and turn your white flashlight into a red flashlight.
