The UFC HEDP M433 Type 120rd Airsoft 40mm Gas Grenade Shell seems to be extremely well engineered. Right off the bat, you see a colorful shining surface of CNC machined steel and aluminum (see photo below). It comes with no packaging.
OEM Rebrand
The UFC CNC airsoft grenade shells look exactly the same as the PPS/SHS CNC self resetting grenade shells. They are probably OEM rebrands.
There are twelve BB holes on top, allowing you to fill 10 BBs in each hole. We have found that it's best to fill the grenade shell with a speedloader inside a container, because BBs are likely to spill while you fill. The speedloader speeds up the process tremendously.
Unlike many other grenade shells, this one has a gas filling port on the top of the grenade. This type of grenade is great for applications where the grenade shell is mounted to the Picatinny weaver rail of a gun (rifle or pistol) and the removal is undesirable.
This grenade shell uses green gas, red gas, or propane. CO2 was not listed as being compatible. We suspect the CO2 pressure is too high for the activation button (see photo below). Just filling the grenade shell with propane already makes the button tough to push with the bare thumb.
Unlike many other grenades that we have seen in the past, this grenade shell auto-resets and do not need you to manually reset it. We have found the self-reset to be a real convenience and a time saver. Not sure why we would go back to use manual reset shells now that self reset shells are on the market.
This grenade shell is meant to be used in an airsoft grenade launcher replica, such as the M203, or a science fiction airsoft grenade launcher, such as the Airsoft3D Helio M7203. But we have found that it's rather fun to play with even without a grenade launcher. It's just the right side for a toilet paper roll, so we've been launching paper rockets (without BBs) using it.
We loaded up the UFC 40mm airsoft grenade shell with 120 rounds of 0.2g biodegradable BB's. Then we gassed it up with a propane can--grenade on top, propane tank on bottom--for about three seconds. We fired grenade shell between 25 to 45 degree angle, using our finger, without a grenade launcher. The cloud of BB's landed approximately 60 feet away. We suspect that you can adjust the distance of travel by changing BB weight, the number of BB's, and, of course, the angle of attack.
After triggering the grenade, it creates a nice bang sound. The grenade shell creates this sound whether it is filled with BB's or not. We have shot a video of the grenade making this sound. See below.
You can use this grenade shell without any BB's for noise effect. Maybe it will distract the enemies in an airsoft game, like Thunder B grenades (though not as loud).
The UFC HEDP M433 Type 120rd Airsoft 40mm Gas Grenade Shell is rather easy to disassemble. You unscrew it in half (see the inside of the 40mm grenade shell in the photo below). There are only three parts inside: activation button, spring, and gas control bearing module.
There is a red O-ring that keeps the BB's from falling out of the grenade shell. If you find that BB's roll out, just re-seat the O-ring from the outside of the shell.
