The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight is an excellent red dot sight. In addition, it has a huge 42mm objective lens that is not typical on a red dot sight. This large objective lens should provide the mean to faster target acquisition. In this article, we review it for airsoft purpose.
The packaging for the NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight is nothing fancy, composed mostly of a logo and feature text (see photo below). But it is sturdy and reusable.
Inside the box, you'll find the red dot scope, transparent lens protectors, a cleaning cloth, extra battery, and an instruction sheet. A battery is already installed in the scope. The photo below shows the content.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight is a big scope. On small guns, like SMG's, it will look a tad out of place. But on a large M4 or larger arsenal, it seems about right. It's actually a little too big for my APS M4 URX Raptor, but with the right modification--large buffer tube, eMag, and underbarrel shotgun--it actually looks right at home (see photo below).
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight is made out of metal and have a nice painted finish just like the APS M4 URX Raptor. The yellowish lens coating shines warmly under the sunlight (see photo below). This sight is a match in heaven for the M4.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight uses a single 2032 lithium button battery as shown in the photo below.
The lithium button battery is stored inside the brightness adjustment knob. You just have to unscrew the cap to get to it.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight supports the Picatinny weaver mount (see photo below). It has adjustable distance, therefore, will work on virtually any Picatinny weaver rail. You can easily attach and detach the red dot scope from your airsoft gun using two thumbscrews.
The following photos demonstrates the mount adjustment. At the narrowest setting, it will mount to a three-slots Picatinny rail. At the widest setting, it will mount to five-slots.
NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight has both elevation and windage adjustment. The adjustment knob in front of the brightness knob allows you to adjust the elevation. The adjustment knob on the side of the scope (see photo below) allows you to adjust windage.
Notice in the photo above that the brightness adjustment has seven levels. Position 0 is off. Position 1 is the dimmest setting and position 7 is the brightest setting. I have no problem leaving the red dot scope on for an entire night of airsoft. It doesn't seem to eat up too much battery power.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight comes with two transparent protective cover (see photo below). They are flip-up covers, therefore, you can flip them up during target practice for clear vision. But if you play airsoft, these transparent protector will protect this scope from BB's.
Cross-Reference
See our "Protecting the Optical Sight on Airsoft Guns" article on why your red dot sight will need protection from airsoft BB's.
The protective covers have a tendency to flip on inappropriately; either from harsh motion or from snagging on clothing. So you might want to tape them down or super glue them.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight works well during daylight. Because it front lens coating (see photo below) that filters out red color from the environment, you can still see the red dot in the sun. The rear lens is not coated, as usual.
The large 42mm view point provides extremely fast target acquisition. Much faster than the 30mm scopes. The transparent protectors blocks very little view port, so you have the widest angle of view. With this scope, I don't feel like my frontal view is blocked by the scope walls.
The NcSTAR 1x42 Red Dot Sight works extremely well in both nighttime and daytime. It's fast target acquisition makes it a pleasure to use. The lens protectors saves you the trouble of making your own. It is the best lens for airsoft, therefore, I have been point to this scope when my friends ask me for recommendation. You just can't go wrong if you can live with its size.
