We had always wanted to make a custom patch for our Airsoft3D logo. Doing a Google search, we came across the Mutiny Shop, which makes custom patches to order. There are no constraints to how many patch you have to order; yeah, they will make even just one for you. Since we are just making a few to experiment with our ideas and their services, Mutiny Shop's no minimum and no setup fee approach is the right way to go.
Our purpose was to make patches for airsoft tactical vest that has Velcro. So Mutiny Shop's Velcro backing standard on all their patches is perfect for our need. You can also order patches without the velcro, but that complicates the ordering process and defeats our airsoft MilSim purpose.
Our logo is quite colorful. Airsoft3D is associated with flamboyant, fun, and excitement. Mutiny Shop's ability to make custom patches that is unlimited in color and detail meets our goal perfectly. The fact that we are able to give them the exact design in lossless PNG format is a real plus.
Ordering was pretty easy, we uploaded the patch, put in our address, select the quantity, then checked out with PayPal. We just wanted to experiment, but still wanted enough patches to put on our stuff. Based on their quantity price breaks (see below), we decided to order four 3x3 patches at $5.5 each.
1-3 patches - $7 4-9 patches - $5.5 10-19 patches - $5 20-24 patches - $4.5 25+ patches - $4
Mutiny Shop had a standard turnaround time of 5 to 15 business days, not including shipping. But our order came extremely quick. We placed the order on a Sunday and the order arrived on the Saturday. That was only six days including shipping.
We submitted a square image of our Airsoft3D logo. The logo had rounded corners. So we weren't sure if the patches are coming back with sharp corners or rounded corners. It turned out that Mutiny Shop's process is smart enough to give us rounded corner patches. That will make it easier for us to distribute the patches when we order a large quantity later.
Mutiny Shop claims that all custom patches will have a "Ultra flat/matte look (not shiny)." That is perfect for tactical uses. Our patches has a textured, matte surface, which prevented gleaming in the sunlight to give our position away to the enemy.
Unlike a rubber patch, the Mutiny Shop custom patch has a very thin layer of printed material, approximately 0.5mm. The Velcro layer is about 2mm thick. The patch has a total thickness of 2.5mm. The entire back is covered in hooked Velcro, so we should have no problem with it staying on the tactical vest or battle dress uniform (BDU).
The patches came back with a curve to them, caused either by the printing process, the Velcro adhesive, or both. But after slapping the patch onto the vest, the patch conforms entirely to the flatness/curvature of the vest. I left an unused patch on my desk. Depends on the day, it would curve downward, upward, or just stay flat. Apparently, the curvature wass caused by varing temperatures, but has no long term effect on the patch.
Mutiny Shop also claims the resulting custom patch is extremely resilient to wear and tear with the following bullet points. Because we just got our patch, obviously, we haven't tested the patch's durability. But their
