If you ever owned an M4/M16 with a carrying handle, then you've probably experienced how handy it can be. But the M16 carrying handle serves only one purpose: allowing you to carrying the gun. Rather than purchasing a M16 carrying handle for your airsoft gun, you can build you own that is not only less expensive, but also more functional. In this article, we will show you how.
The concept is based on our "Build Your Own Stick Battery Holder" article that we wrote a while back. In that article, we have explained how you can make a stick battery holder with the right PVC pipe and a 1" Picatinny scope ring. In this article, we are going to expand that idea to make a PVC carrying handle that could serve multiple purposes.
To make a carrying handle, you just have to add one more 1" Picatinny scope ring to the original concept. That means one PVC pipe and two scope rings. The should be 1" tall so that the end product has enough space to act as a carrying handle. Photo below shows the PVC carrying handle.
To make it, mount the scope ring onto the Picatinny rail first. After spacing the two scope ring to the distance you desire, mount the PVC pipe into the two scope rings. After that, you can now remove the carrying handle as one unit, without spacing it again. Photo below shows the scope rings properly spaced on top of the XBG Carbine.
This carrying handle can serve multiple purposes. One, you can cut a few thin wires and tape it onto the front and rear of the tube. That would serve as old fashion crosshair scopes. To adjust, moves the front or rear crosshair in the right direction.
Another purpose is already stated by the stick battery holder article. You can now use the carrying handle as the battery carrier, rather that installing a PEQ battery box that could make your airsoft gun harder to maneuver. Photo below shows the carrying handle with caps and angled elbow for routing the wires. The caps and elbow are pressure fit, so you can easily install and remove to access the battery compartment.
This carrying handle can also serve as a Picatinny riser. That's especially true if you are going to put a stick battery in it. Simple install a Weaver rail on top, as described in our "Adding Rails to a Mock Silencer" article. This additional rail allows you to mount red dot sights or other accessories. In fact, you can glue rails all around the tube.
This article only demonstrates how to build the carrying handle. Unless your are building a scifi airosft gun or building it for snow operations, you'll likely want to paint it to the camouflage of your choice.
