The JG Urban Assult UA-3 RAS is an airsoft replica of the Steyr AUG firearm. It is not quite the same, but closely resembles the Steyr AUG A3. The rail interface system (RIS) also have some resemblance to the Steyr AUG A2. The following Steyr AUG A2 and Steyr AUG A3 images, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License by Steyr Mannlicher, provide references to compare to the airsoft replica, which we will review in this article.
The JG Urban Assult UA-3 RAS airsoft replica has incredible specs that claims 450 FPS out of the box. We've always wanted to give it a try. In addition, we have always wanted to checkout Airsoft Megastore's Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) policy. It's policy states the following:
"CERTIFIED Pre-Owned? More Like CUSTOMIZED Pre-Owned! What does that mean for you? Simple: UPGRADES. Whenever its warranted, our Certified Technicians will not only RESTORE an Airsoft gun to factory specifications, they will also choose to, AT THEIR DISCRETION, perform CUSTOM upgrades and enhancements to the gun for more optimized performance, including but not limited to installing upgraded springs, air nozzles, upgrading pistons and/or piston heads, re-polishing barrels and/or installing tight-bore barrels, just to name a few."
Theoretically, based on this policy, the original 450 FPS should be honored by the Airsoft Megastore's certified technicians. So when Airsoft Megsstore have an CPO JG Urban Assult UA-3 RAS in stock for $150, then provided a 30% off coupon for its CPO inventory, we snagged one up at just above $100 (shipping and tax). Brand new, we seen this gun being priced somewhere between $200 and $300. In this article, we will test the CPO policy theory while playing with this awesome airsoft gun.
The package arrived in great shape. Airsoft Megastore provided a "Certified Pre-Owned Inspection and Warranty Certificate". The certificate claimed that the JG AUG AEG has a CPO rating of 'A'. Under the signature line, it claims "I verify this product has been 100% inspected, restored, and tested to be in 100% excellent working condition." However, there is no signature on the signature line. We are going to keep our fingers crossed on its claim.
The CPO certificate claimed that the package includes "Rifle, rechargeable battery, wall charger, and 300-round high capacity magazine." We found all the included parts. The package also included these components that were not claimed on the CPO certificate:
The supplement instruction manual is ripped and the paper targets looks handled, but not used. Otherwise, the rest of the contents and the cardboard box looks like brand new condition.
The only items we found missing is the cleaning rod and the bag of BB's. We did find the two ends of the cleaning rod in the box, but the middle section is missing. We weren't too disappointed at all with these two missing pieces. ;-)
We can see some wear on the JG Urban Assault UA-3 RAS. It's mostly on the top rail. There are gunk stuck to parts of it. And some paint is rubbed off. Otherwise, the gun still looks new.
The magazine that comes in the box looks brand new with hardly any use. We can only see marks on it from being inserted into the AEG and pulled out again. Perhaps the tech used it to test. Otherwise, there is no other marks on it. In fact, the magazine looks so new, we don't believe it has ever seen an actual trip to the field.
The magazine is a standard high-capacity AUG airsoft magazine. It has a sliding door for you to pour BB's into it. There is a winding wheel on the bottom of the magazine for you to wind it up. The BB feeding hole is at the top. There is a latch release that allows you to unload the BB's that has been wound-up.The content includes the standard J.G. Works 1100 mAh test battery. The battery looks absolutely brand new and never used. The transparent wrapper is in perfect shape. The Tamiya connector and wiring has never been twisted or tangled. It's in perfect condition.
Too bad it's just a test battery. In the past, we've seen that the J.G. Works 1100 mAh test battery will not stand up to much use in airsoft. We've since started using these test batteries to charge our SmartPhones instead.
The gun and the magazine shot without any problems whatsoever on the included test battery. If almost feels like the test battery is sufficient for this gun. Maybe it's the mosfet?
We sat-up a chrono station and shot the JG Urban Assault UA-3 RAS through the chronograph, into the BB trap. We used 0.2g biodegradable BB's for the test. The chronograph showed exactly 400 FPS when the hop-up is turned all the way down. It shot 385 FPS when the hop-up is turned all the way up.
Although we had hoped for 450 FPS, the measured velocity is still within range of the advertised velocity range, which was 395-450 FPS. In this regard, we found the Airsoft Megastore CPO products to be extremely good value.
The JG Urban Assault UA-3 RAS contains a metal version 3 gearbox, in the shoulder stock. This bullpup feature allows a full-length 509mm barrel to be used. The inner barrel is made out of brass, therefore, is a candidate for stainless steel replacement.
The outer barrel is floating and it wiggles. We can see movement on the inner barrel as well when we wiggle the outer barrel. The barrel system definitely need some tightening with Teflon tape and o-rings. The quad rail is extremely sturdy, so maybe it's better to fasten the outer barrel to the quad rail and forget the floating hype on this airsoft gun.
