Ever since I started playing airsoft, I had simulated real-cap using mid-cap magazines. I used airsoft as tactical training for the real thing. So feeding the mid-caps with speed loader is an important part of the process.
A typical speed loader holds 100 BB's. That means you can load two 40 round (because you'll lose about 10 BB's in the process of using it on the field) M4 mags before refilling the speed loader again. It's a pain when you have to load 7 M4 mags (standard U.S. Army load-out).
So when I saw the D-Boys 450 Round Airsoft BB Speed Loader on sale for $5 on Airsoft Megastore, I picked one up with the rest of my order. This is the review article for this device.
The speed loader comes in a transparent plastic package (shown above). The D-Boys packaging design actually looks pretty good compared to many other airsoft packagings I've seen.
The D-Boys 450 Round Airsoft BB Speed Loader is modeled after an M4 magazine. It's intended you carry it in your magazine pouch on the field. But for me, a MilSim player, I will only use it to load BB's off the field.
The top of the speed loader is fairly standard (see photo below) . There is a sliding door to dump BB's into the seed loader. The standard speed loader has a flipping door, rather than a sliding door. The BB pusher is no different than a standard speed loader. The lock on the other hand, is a switch on top, rather than a toggle pin on the side.
The bottom of the speed loader has the BB feeding tube that is practically the same as the standard speed loader (see photo below). The BB is kept from falling out using a black o-ring.
One nice feature on this high-capacity speed loader is the pistol magazine feeder. It is permanently attached to the speed loader and swings out when needed (see photo below). That means you will never lose it. And you won't ever have to dig for it in your bag.
The D-Boys 450 Round Airsoft BB Speed Loader also comes with another BB feeding attachment (see photo below). However, I do not know which magazine it is for. This one is not permanently attached to the speed loader, so you'll have to be careful not to lose it.
The D-Boys 450 Round Airsoft BB Speed Loader is much bigger than a standard speed loader. So holding it is a little bit awkward. But the biggest problem is that the BB doesn't flow into the feeding tube smoothly. A lot of time they just get stuck in the chamber.
It turns out that the spring is not long enough. Therefore, it doesn't push the slide all the way up, blocking the BB's from entering the feeding tube. There are seven screws on the speed loader, so this problem can be fixed by adding a spacer. But it would have certainly been nicer if the speed loader worked from the start.
