Haywire is a 2011 action-thriller that feature Gina Carano. Gina is a mixed martial arts fighter who performs her own stunts. In this film, Gina plays Mallory, a special operator in the private sector. This movie is well made and the tactics seems quite realistic. Even the performance of the Garda Emergency Response Unit (ERU) seems tactically correct. We are going to analyze this film for tactics we can use for airsoft.
If you got a DVD of this movie, follow along. Otherwise, you can rent the Haywire Amazon instant video. Right now, you can also see it on YouTube. Not sure how long the YouTube link will last. Grab your popcorn and let's start learning.
0:34 She's not wearing the right camouflage for a snowy forest. But I guess she's not expecting any combat action here.
11:39 Aaron stated the situation. It's a hostage rescue situation with two rooms. Tactically, there should be two breachers for each room. They are two men short if one is in the getaway car and the other is guarding the doorway. We'll see if Aaron is right when they breach.
12:25 They are using comms. Very important even in airsoft.
12:58 The two men stack.
13:20 He covers the stairway, while she moves. Then she covers the hallway and he moves. Basic leap frog technique.
13:22 While Mallory covers the to the right, she uses her right eye and right hand, putting her body into the hallway. If she is truly professional, she should have transition to her left side so that she can use the wall as cover. On the other hand, her partner has transitioned correctly to the left side.
13:39 Not enough footage of the breach, so we can't determine if Aaron is correct.
14:45 Pistol combat. When the enemy opens fires on Mallory's team, Mallory's team immediately returns suppression fire. Very good.
14:56 Mallory chases. Bad idea. The enemy can setup a hasty ambush or, worse, lead her directly into an ambush.
14:59 Mallory using her right side on a right corner again. :-(
16:15 Hasty ambush occurred right here. But it wasn't much of a fight. Could have been deadly in a real situation. In fact, Mallory would have "died" on the airsoft field.
18:23 Aaron was also curious why she chased him. Again, bad idea to chase.
44:09 Watch your six!
49:27 Garda enters with a three man stack. Red dot sight at eye level even when pushing the door open with one hand. After entering, each element covering a different firing sector. Well executed.
49:31 First Garda element clears room to the right. The second and third element moves upstairs. After clearing the room, the first element joins the stack as the last element.
49:45 The second three men stack. Red dot sight at eye level as they move.
51:04 Two men Garda ERU team stacks at the door way. When the second element has caught up, he pats the first man, signaling that he is ready to move. The two men immediately moves into the room in unison.
51:09 As the two men clears their own firing sector, the second man transitions from left side to right side. He sweep the muzzle downward to prevent muzzle sweeping his partner.
51:15 As the two men moves forward, the second element turns back periodically to watch their six. Very important maneuver.
51:49 Another two men stack. What happened to the three men stacks??? Nevertheless, the first element is looking straight forward, the second element sweeps the left firing sector.
53:54 Parameter security. One operator looks to the right. The other looks to the left.
1:03:17 Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) standing around in the open. You don't want to do that in airsoft.
1:03:25 Enemy drives up to fire at the LEO. Not very smart either. They could have sneaked up on the LEO instead. But I guess in this situation, where the LEO believes that they are federal agents, they could have approached in any manner.
1:03:30 Not very smart for the enemies to walk straight up in the open. Should have moved in cover while flanking Mallory.
1:11:15 Kenneth and Aaron cleared the house individually, bumped into each other, and almost fired. Make sure you look at your target on the airsoft field before firing to ensure it's not your teammate.
That's all the tactics that applies to airsoft in this movie. If you see more than I do, please let us know.
