"You can see the stream of pellets. Aim by adjusting the trajectory." That is a typical advice provided by pros and newbies. In fact, I have also read about this tactic in a airsoft tactic book. It is true, most players (not all) can see the stream of BB's flying out of their gun. So is it a good idea to use this aiming technique when playing airsoft? Although this is a certainly a valid tactic, and no one can stop you from using it even if it is a bad tactic, there are numerous fallacy to it.
For one, it is extremely bad training for good form. Many folks uses airsoft as an inexpensive, but realistic, training counterpart to real firearms and scenarios. Real bullets travel three to ten times faster than legal airsoft velocity. In Iife and death situations, you won't be able to aim by following a stream of real bullets. By training with this airsoft aiming tactic, you are reducing your real life combat efficiency. Perhaps, you are playing airsoft as a sport and have zero intention to ever get into real life combat. Sure, ok, you can use this tactic. But if you believe in that crock, then you might as well exhibit other bad habits--like stick out your elbow or knees while snap-shooting--during airsoft. Face it, airsoft is real combat minus danger, hatred, and death.
Second, aiming by following a stream of pellets generally means that you are not hitting the enemy the first time. That translates to you warning the enemy with the first shot, giving the enemy time to cover, losing out on a kill, and announcing your position. In combat shooting, that is a lot of "mistakes" for the purpose of aiming. It does away with the "one shot one kill" mentality of a good marksman.
Third, aiming via streaming pellets waste pellets. Every pellet you use for this purpose is gone. Airsoft pellets are inexpensive. If you have a high capacity magazine, it probably doesn't matter to you. But if you are playing MilSim with 30 round magazines, you'd really feel the pain of using your precious rounds to aim. Make your shots count is the bottom line.
So what should you do if you don't use the airsoft pellet stream to aim? Use the iron sight. If the iron sight is not fast or accurate enough, get a red dot sight or a magnifying scope. Dial it in at a range or in your backyard. Practice bring the gun sight up to your eye in one quick, smooth motion. Practice marksmanship. Train yourself to be a better shooter.
We won't go into details of marksman techniques. But there are numerous books, articles, and other resources on that topic. U.S. Army, and possibly other government agencies, has their training manual online in public domain. It contain valuable information for marksmanship.

Not everyone can see the stream of BB's flying out of the airsoft gun. Out of five of us who play airsoft, only one to two of us (not me) could see the BB's at ~350 FPS. At least three of us could not see the BB. So for those of us who can't see the streaming airsoft BB's, we can't use it for aiming.

Recently, I discovered more reasons why you shouldn't rely on on the stream of BBs to determine where you are shooting... You will have to sight in your guns beforehand and make your shots count in these games.
1. You might get caught playing a pistol or shotgun only game. GBB pistol have higher recoil, so you won't be able to stream your BBs. Neither type of guns allows you to fire fully automatic, which is the optimal condition for streaming BBs.
2. Some zombie games are limited to pistols and shotguns with limited ammo. For example, Code Red Airsoft Field limits the zombie game to 50 rounds. Two rounds to kill a zombie means you have to make every shot count.
3. There are several other game modes that inherantly limits you. Look up GMOD "Murder" and "Trouble in Terrorist Town" on this site. In there scenarios, you have very little chance of getting very many shots off.

My fellow team member mentioned another case where aiming with yout BB stream is a fail. I am sure we have all experienced coming head-to-head with your opponent at the same instance. If you are using your BB stream to aim, and the other player is using an accurate red dot, then he has a much higher chance of killing you.

Title: Airsoft 101: Are You Really Hitting Your Enemy?
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Originally, I was going to title this article as "Airsoft 101: Keeping Your Gun Vertical". But my guess was that title has less impact than the problem at hand. Anyway, if you had ever thought that your enemy was cheating, then you should give this article a good read. Perhaps they weren't cheating . . .
