Just went to Code Red Airsoft Park for a night operation this past weekend. It was black moonless night. The only thing that lit the field was the stars, city light bouncing off the atmosphere, and the lights from the staging area. It was fun and challenging. The experience had taught me several things about a night operation. It would have been more fun if I had known these tactics beforehand.
1. All the players are going to be flashlight-crazed the first game. But they learn quick, because enemies and gunshots will converge on their location. By the second game, the field will be extremely dark and quiet, because no one will be using flashlight.
2. In the dark, no one can tell friend from foe, so have your team come up with challenge words right away. For example, ours is "flash thunder". Anyone who speaks of either word is considered as a friendly.
3. Night vision is excellent in the night, but it should not replace the naked eyes that are fully adjusted to the night. If possible, some team members should use night vision while others use naked eyes. Use the night vision as part of your SLLS--stop, look, listen, smell--process.
4. In a city map--Open field with buildings, everyone is going to hide quietly in buildings, while looking out windows. Few players are going to move out and about much. Practice breaching and clearing. Move from building to building quickly, clearing and securing as you go. If you are sure there is no friendlies in a building, shoot everyone you see.
5. Move slowly in the night. It's harder to see, so it will be harder to spot you. Moving slower also allows you to be quieter. Sound is a very important element during a night operation. In many cases, you may be able to hear more clearly than you can see. Airsoft gun shots are also give away to enemy locations.

On an airsoft field that is lit, or partially lit, your eyes won't have the chance to adjust to the darkness within shadows. SC Viper @ SC Village is a good example. Flashlights should be used whenever traversing dark areas or to light up shaded corners. In the case of partia lighting, flashlights are less likely to draw attention. But care should be taken that you don't warn the enemy just around the corner.

When you encounter a group of people in the dark, you don't know who's friend and who's foe, you should stay hidden and observe until you can determine whether they are friend or foe. This strategy is particularly useful in two situations: 1) your team does not have challenge words; 2) you don't want to give your position away, because you don't have the firepower to take on the chance that they are the OPFOR (OPposition FORce).
