Parallax on a gun is caused by the fact that your aiming sight is not on the same axis as your inner barrel. So far no one has solved this problem. An aiming sight behind the bullet means you can't see through the aiming sight. An aiming sight in front of the bullet means the bullet will hit the aiming sight when it fires.
So, until this problem is solved, we will just have to deal with it. But first, lets talk about the effect of parallax. Due to parallax, you can only zero a sight to a specific distance. Let say you zeroed it in at 100 feet. That means you will hit a target spot on the crosshair when it is standing at 100 feet. But where will the bullet hit when the target is standing at 50 feet or 150 feet?
Assuming there is no gravity, thereby no bullet drop, if the target is standing closer to you than 100 feet, then you will hit below the crosshair. You will hit higher than the crosshair if the target is standing further away. With bullet drop, the result is even more complicated.
But enough theory, how do we deal with it? One, know your zero distance and learn to estimate distance. When the enemy is closer to you, realize you are going to high slightly below the cross hair. If you are shooting a man size target, then it is not a big deal. But if you are trying to hit the shoulder of a juggernaut, or someone's hand that is out of cover, you have to aim a little higher.
For targets that are further away than the zeroed distance, you have to be aware of the BB trajectory of your airsoft gun. Does your BB drop rapidly after 100 feet? Or does it shoot straight up to 200 feet? If the latter is the case, then you can safely aim a little lower. But if you are at the extreme of your straight-shooting range, then you may put the crosshair on the mark or even aim a little higher, depending on how quickly the BB drops at that distance.
In either case, knowing your zeroing distance and being able to estimate the enemy's distance is extremely important. Next time, I will talk about learning to estimate distance.
