For a long time, I thought aiming a gun is second nature. But after hearing our crew's after action report of an after-Christmas event that I couldn't attend, we are thinking otherwise.
Apparently a friend that our crew brought to airsoft for the first time didn't know how to use the iron sight. At the end of the day, he complained to our crew that he's not hitting anything with the spare MP5. When our crew ask him how he aim, he says he would put the front sight on the enemy and fire!
Maybe at point blank distance, he would hit something. But any further than that, the shot is highly like to miss. If he can see the front iron sight clearly on the enemy, without the rear sight getting in the way, then he is definitely off the mark.
So here is the jest of how to aim with iron sights. First identify your front iron sight. Then identify your second iron sight. To aim, bring the front iron sight up to your target and align the rear iron sight to the target as well. When you peep through the rear iron sight, you should see the front iron sight on the target. That's when the pellet will hit the target, assuming the iron sights are zeroed in.
Now that we have the jest out of the way, let me explain the theory of aiming. Bullets, or pellets, travels in a straight line out of a gun. From bird's eye view, the bullet will travel in a straight line until it hit the target or the ground. As in mathematics, in order to have a line, you have to have two points. If you look closely at the front iron sight, you'll realize that it is basically a point. Now look at the rear sight, which is also a point. These two points, when zeroed to the mark, provides the line-of-sight for the bullet. So when you align the the two iron sights, you are lining up the bullet's "straight" trajectory to the target.
