Clean Your Barrel to Increase FPS

Quite concerned that my airsoft AEG was shooting 260 FPS a few nights ago at an indoor CQB field. Originally, the gun shoots at 330 FPS. I have only played six indoor CQB games since it was originally assembled and measured at 330 FPS.

So I sat up an indoor shooting range in my garage and used Chrono Connect Mobile Lite to set-up a controlled test environment. In this controlled environment, my gun averaged 250 FPS. After being satisfied with my control environment, I proceeded to "fix" my airsoft rifle.

First thing I did was to remove the inner barrel for cleaning. I wrapped a small strip of toilet paper on the cleaning rod, dipped it in rubbing alcohol, and slid it through the inner barrel ONCE. A lot of gunk came out. Let me emphasize that I only poke it through once (without even back tracking).

I reassembled the gun and measured again in the controlled environment. The first shot measured 300 FPS. Next shot was 280 FPS. Third shot was 270 FPS. I shot around fifty more rounds. They ranged any where between 270 and 300 FPS, averaging 285 FPS.

So that's 35 FPS increase just running the cleaning rod through the inner barrel once. Without explicitly cleaning the hop-up buck I wonder what would happen if you do a much more thorough cleaning. Next time I take apart the gun, I will answer that question.
