Looks like airsoft and paintball have a new competitor.
I looked into the irM4 that the event is planning to use. It's based on the old Laser Tag technology in a new spin. Basically they put the Laser Tag technology into an M4 replica. That means the OPFOR has to wear a special vest that can detect the IR "shots". It means you have to aim for the chest--body area. Make me wonder what they do about the snap shooting, where only the head, arm, and gun is sticking out.
The irHeadband provides additional IR sensors for the head, which solves the snap shooting scenario partially. It still can't detect arm or leg shots.
The additional innovation iCombat--maker of irM4--made is that the gun contains additional gas mechanism to provide recoil effect. The gas mechanism is powered by a CO2 cartridge. The gun also provides simulate muzzle flash and gun firing noise. Not sure how realistic the recoil and noise can be. But I don't see how the muzzle flash can be realistic considering real muzzle flash has flames that protrudes from the muzzle. The simulation is probably with lighting effects.
An additional innovation is the "Stress X Belt". Wearing the belt allows the player to feel a shock when "hit". It's a great innovation for Laser Tag. But players can already feel pain in airsoft and paintball today.
It is interesting to see new technology on the market. And it will be interesting to see how it develops in the future.
