California new SB-199 law is coming into play next week. I'm going to comply with the law but still apply maximum field advantage. I'm going to paint all my guns camo green. Then use green fluorescent paints to paint stripes the complies with SB-199.
Based on the law, the green camo should meet the following: "entire exterior surface of the device is white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple, either singly or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern".
Even if it doesn't, the fluorescent green complies with the "fluorescent coloration" requirement.
We only need to comply with one of the two above requirements. Complying with both ensures maximum coverage in the court of law (I believe as I'm not a lawyer).
Painting the gun this way also provide excellent camouflage for field play. The only question left... which of the two fluorescent green spray paints, below, should I order?

I have read on forums and confirmed by a friend (he recently did multicam on his m4) that Krylon stays on better than rust-o-leum for airsoft equipment. Good luck! Send us a link if you post pics

My understanding is that current airsoft equipment can be essentially made compliant with wide tape. I based this on youtube informational video such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfOx64Nhb7k and the following text in the law:

(4) A BB device that is an airsoft gun that expels a projectile, such as a BB or pellet, that is 6mm or 8mm caliber which meets the following:
(A) If the airsoft gun is configured as a handgun, in addition to the blaze orange ring on the barrel required by federal law, the airsoft gun has a trigger guard that has fluorescent coloration over the entire guard, and there is a two centimeter wide adhesive band around the circumference of the protruding pistol grip that has fluorescent coloration.
(B) If the airsoft gun is configured as a rifle or long gun, in addition to the blaze orange ring on the barrel required by federal law, the airsoft gun has a trigger guard that has fluorescent coloration over the entire guard, and there is a two centimeter wide adhesive band with fluorescent coloring around the circumference of any two of the following:
(i) The protruding pistol grip.
(ii) The buttstock.
(iii) A protruding ammunition magazine or clip.

if a cop comes up and peels off your tape with reasonably little effort you could be in trouble according to the next section that comes after what you posted:
(c) The adhesive bands described in paragraph (4) of subdivision (b) shall be applied in a manner not intended for removal, and shall be in place on the airsoft gun prior to sale to a customer.
(d) This section shall be operative on January 1, 2016.
so paint would be a viable option. for tape it would have to be a permanent affixation. perhaps a dab of superglue before you wrap the area in tape may satisfy the requirement or tape with a bonding adhesive
this is all in addition to blazing orange tip they're still requiring. the video didnt show the tip as orange so it still wasnt sb199 compliant.

Last bit I wanna say about SB199 compliance is regardless of the markings if we treat the airsoft gun like a real firearm(using gun bags to carry them around in, keeping them unloaded during transport, only to/from airsoft events, etc), and employ good safe practices, I believe we are protecting ourselves and those around us. Let's make 2016 a great year for airsoft!

I have read several interpretations of the law. I have read the law myself. It seems that after January 1st 2016 all existing airsoft guns will transition from a BB device into an limitation firearms. The imitation firearms are treated for the most part as real firearms, e.g. transport locked, do not display in public, etc. We have been treating ours that way already. So, there are two things which are still iffy:
- ) it is a matter of opinion if an outdoor airsoft field is a public place CPC 20170. Some say, fields being fenced with controlled access (by wristband), is not considered a public place. Some would say that the fields are visible from the road and therefore public.
- ) it is definitely a misdemeanor to remove any existing required markings on an imitation firearm CPC 20150(a). So, for those without the orange tip that could be problem. However, the law allows the manufacture of imitation firearms for personal use (as does it for real firearms). During such process I may choose not to put any markings on it, thereby producing a legal imitation firearm that did not have markings to begin with in which case 20150a should not apply.
If we paint the guns as required, it will transition them from imitation firearm to a bb device. In that case the law for imitation firearm does not apply. BB device laws are less strict - don't sell or furnish to a minor CPC19910, 19915, do not bring to school CPC 626.10, do not brandish in a threatening manner CPC417.4.
After all that, it is up to DA and subsequently a judge to decide what should be done in a particular case. So, in our case, a peace officer must venture onto an airsoft field or a staging area, see an imitation firearm and charge with 20150 - a misdemeanor, a 20170 - an infraction. Should, then the DA proceed with the case and would the judge allow the trial. That would be a good "what if" question for a lawyer.
