I swear by my red dot sight. I won't play any airsoft games without it. Although my red dot sight comes with four reticles, I have always preferred the simple red dot. But this past weekend, during the IMTT Basic Tactical Training, I have found a reason to use the other reticles.
The training spanned over eight hours at the local Code Red airsoft field. During the exercise, we were outside practice our shooting skills. Even though my red dot sight had eleven brightness settings, I had a hard time making out the red dot in bright sunlight. That meant my target acquisition was extremely slow.
Frustrated, I switched over to another reticle--the red dot centered in a circle. Incredibly, it was really easy to find the red dot in bright sunlight. Target acquisition immediately improved.
Now I know why there are four reticles. The red dot is great indoor, in the dark, where too much light would create glare. But in bright environment, where the red dot is difficult to find, the bigger reticles allow you to find the dot easier.
