Red Dot Sight Adjustment Confuses New Players

Most red dot sights provide elevation and windage adjustment knobs. They are generally clearly marked with 'U' and 'R' direction. Most folks can identify 'U' as up and 'R' as right. But if you really think about it, the marking is actually not clear at all. For example, when you rotate toward the up direction, are you moving the red dot or the target up?

Intuitively, most players will think turning in the up direction would cause the red dot to move up. But in reality, on most (if not all) red dot sights, you are actually moving the target up (red dot down).

This has confused me when I first got my red dot sight. And it has recently confused several of my friends. One of them has just complained to me yesterday that he couldn't adjust his new red dot sight low enough to match the actual trajectory on his new AK47. After we have talked about this relative direction issue, he was able to get it zeroed in.

To throw more confusion into the pile, let's examine the laser sight adjustment. The laser sight emits a concentrated red beam into a distance. To adjust the elevation and windage on a laser sight, you actually do move the laser dot in the direction of the adjustment. So if you come from the world of using laser sights, adjusting the red dot sight is exactly opposite of the way you adjust the laser sight.
