A friend of mine wanted an underbarrel shotgun for the M4 close-quarter battle (CQB) assault rifle, like the one shown in the photo below.. We looked and looked and found that there are no underbarrel shotgun attachments for Picatinny Weaver rails. In fact, we couldn't find any underbarrel shotguns for airsoft, despite the fact that there are tons of underbarrel grenade launchers. Perhaps people are using underbarrel grenade launchers as underbarrel shotguns?
But I had an idea. How about taking an airsoft shotgun with top rails, but no shoulder stock and just mate it to the bottom of the M4 CQB with underbarrel rails? A shotgun like the one in the photo below could possibly work.
With that concept, all my friend needed is a Picatinny Weaver to Picatinny Weaver rail adapter; female-to-female Picatinny Weaver adapter to be exact. Some people ever call it the "lesbian rail adapter". But guess what? This adapter doesn't exist! There are certainly people asking for this adapter, but no one manufactures nor sells it.
So I have another idea. How about taking two 1/2" Picatinny Weaver risers and grue them back to back with metal to metal epoxy? Just get flat top rails of the same, or different, length (see photo below) and glue their tops together. You'd end up with a female-to-female Picatinny Weaver adapter.
Making a female-to-female adapter this way yields a 1" adapter. That might make the shotgun a little too low. If your only interest is to make an underbarrel shotgun, then you might consider gluing the riser rail directly to the shotgun rail. Like this . . . That would reduce the distance by 1/2".
And if you don't care to use the shotgun separately from the CQB rifle, you can even attempt to cut off the handle and other parts to make it smaller. Of course, you'll want to take it apart first to be sure there aren't any critical components that you'd cut into.
Here is another idea. If you aren't interested in ever separating the CQB rifle from the shotgun, you can save yourself some space by gluing the shotgun rail directly to the CQB rifle rail. It would eliminate the adapter distance altogether. And it's not as bad as it sounds, because on many CQB airsoft rifles, the Rail Interface System (RIS) can be removed from the gun and replaced with another (see photo below). So if you do ever want to remove the underbarrel shotgun, just change out the RIS. In fact, it's probably easier to glue the RIS to the shotgun, then is it to glue two airsoft guns together.
All this talk about making a underbarrel shotgun for an assault rifle sounds like a lot of fun. If you ever try this idea, please share your final result with us.

Finally found a Picatinny to Picatinny rail adapter, or what some people call the "lesbian rail adapter". It's a 3D printed part and it's pretty cool:

There is now a realistic underbarrel shotgun for airsoft. Ironically, it's realistic in firepower--shoots 12 BB's at a time--but is a science fiction design. It's Helio M726 Underbarrel Shotgun. Watch video below.
