Growing Pains with Radio Communication

We started using radios in our airsoft battles. Each of us had gotten a different headset. Some of us were using security headset that fits only in the ears. Others were using throat mics that wrapped around the neck with a receiver in the ear. Due to our inexperience with the equipment, we bumped into several growing pains. So far, we were able to overcome a few of them...

Growing Pain 1: It's Probably Not the Headset

The first night we used our radio, we kept cutting in and out with each other. We didn't know what was wrong. We blamed each other's headset. We had thought that the voice was not making to the mic. So we kept speaking louder and louder, until we started yelling into the mic.

Over the period of several airsoft sessions, we figured out that some field had too much interference with the channel we were using. When switched to a higher power channel, the problem went away.

Growing Pain 3: Talk Softly

After growing accustomed to screaming into the mic (and giving out position away), we still did not understand what each other were saying. The sounds were muffled. We tried talking softly into the security headset and throat mic. And what do you know? We started to understand the voice communication.

Growing Pain 3: Hold the Button Longer

We used the push-to-talk (PTT) button to talk. Then we let go of the button when we were done. But we immediately spoke after pushing the button and let go of it immediately after we spoke. The beginning and end of the sentence usually got cut off.

Using the call signs at the beginning of the communication helps with the beginning being cut off. Holding the button down for two seconds longer when you finish talking help preserve the ending of your sentence.
