This weekend, I was using a high-capacity magazine with my M4 to run some tests on a new Angel Custom inner barrel. During the test, the winding wheel on the high-cap magazine stopped clicking. And with every turn of the winding wheel, I can feel the winding wheel slipping (unwind). So I decided to disassemble it. You can see disassembly instruction for it here: Asia Electronic Guns M4/M16 High Cap Magazine Review.
After disassembling the magazine, I found that the winding wheel is pressed into the plastic insert, not fastened down by any screws. Photos below shows the winding wheel on one side and the hole for the winding wheel attachment on the other side. You can see larger images in the link above.
Because the winding wheel is not attached firmly by any means with a fastener, it actually has some play in the shell. As you rotate it, it is possible it moves out a little bit, past the anti-reverse pin (the source of the click). When it does move outward toward the shell, it's free from the anti-reverse pin, causing it to slip and unwind.
The solution is to use a thick washer around the hex nut on the winding wheel. It has to be thick enough to prevent the winding wheel from moving toward the shell.
