Today, my AEG Airsoft Gun Doesn't Fire. I thought the battery was dead, so I charged it on my Panda Radio Control AC/DC Auto Quick Charger. Guess what? The battery wasn't dead. The v2 gearbox in the airsoft had locked up. I overcharged the 8.4v 1600 mAh NiMH battery.
You know what happens when you overcharge a NiMH battery? It feels burning hot. The shrink wrap around the battery had shrunk and broke.
As soon as I wrapped my hand around it, I let it go. The impact on the ground probably damaged it even more. I left it to cool on the concrete in the backyard, hoping it wouldn't burst into flame. Luckily, it cooled off after half an hour.
I cut off all the insulation to double-check all of the batteries and connections. The externals looked like they were in good shape. Voltmeter showed that the battery is low in charge. I re-wrapped the battery and charged up the battery again. It seemed to work, although probably less efficiently than before.
Back to the point... None of this would have happened if I had a smart charger or a balancing charger. A smart charger would have stopped charging after the battery is full. A balancing charger would charge up each battery cell evenly before cutting off the charge. Here are two affordable chargers on Amazone:
Tenergy TB6-B 50W Balancing Charger for NiMH/NiCD/Li-PO/Li-Fe/SLA Battery Packs
I plan to buy one of these two chargers to avoid this potentially dangerous situation in the future.
