After seeing first hand the M4 metal gearbox breaking itself while firing (no rounds) on the APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4, I decided to look up metal gearbox breaking. It turns out that the gearbox cracking due to wear is a common failure on the V2 gearbox. Basically, if you are going to play with V2 gearbox, then it's going to break.
So I looked into how to prevent the V2 gearbox from cracking and breaking. Out of all the suggestion I read (radiusing, piston padding, etc.), only one thing seems to be the end all answer.
That's the Shock Transfer System (STS) as shown in the photo below. The idea of the STS is to brace the front of the V2 metal gearbox against the M4 upper receiver. The only constraints are that the M4 upper receiver must be metal and the hop-up must be one-piece.
Sadly, this brace is only for M4 airsoft guns, leaving MP5 airsoft players and other guns in the cold. Currently, STS is not available for any other gun.
Luckily for me, the APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4 has a full metal body. And most M4 airsoft guns has a one-piece hop-up. The STS is available on Amazon (see "Related Links" below) and I have ordered one a few minutes ago. If it works, it is an excellent upgrade for your M4, which would save you a ton of money in the long run. When it arrives I will take some photos and post a full review.

I've received the STS only a few days after I ordered it. I installed it last night, shot some photos and posted a review for it.
The installation into the APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4 isn't as easy as the standard installation. But once it's in, it feels quite solid.
The full review and installation write up is located here: PPS/SHS Shock Transfer System (STS) Review

Title: Misconception About Metal Gearbox vs. Plastic Gearbox
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: One of the most common advice given to beginning airsoft players is to never buy a plastic gearbox gun. The reason is that metal gearbox is more durable and last longer. While that is true, given the cost of metal gearbox guns are $100 and up, while a plastic gearbox automatic electric gun (AEG) cos . . .

Title: Evike Bone Yard: APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Looks like version 2 gearbox breaking isn't all that uncommon. See "Preventing Your M4 Gearbox from Breaking". So I ordered the Shock Transfer System (STS) from that thread, a new APS gearbox, and a 8.4v NiMH battery. The gearbox and the 8.4v battery has arrived. But I'm still waiting on the STS. . . .
