Metal vs. Plastic Airsoft Magazines

I recently destroyed a Magpul PTS 30 Round EMAG Airsoft Magazine. The plastic magazine jammed with BB's. And there is no way to disassemble it without destroying it (see "Magpul PTS 30 Round EMAG Airsoft Magazine Review" article). The plastic magazine is glued together without any screws.

A few days ago, my friend brought his brand new MP5 to the field with eight or nine brand new MP5 magazines. They were plastic. One of them was defective, because when he loaded it with BB's, it split at the seam. It had no screws and was assembled using glue.

He can repair the magazine by gluing it back together. But if it ever jams in the future, it's probably a throwaway item.

I have several metal magazines. Although they have a metal outer shell, the inside assembly (magazine insert) is still made out of plastic. The difference between a full plastic magazine is that the metal magazine is assembled with screws. Even the plastic insert uses screws. When any of these metal magazines jam, you can always disassemble and reassemble the entire magazine to clear the jam.

My take is to go with metal magazine if you are a good and handy with tools. But if you have enough money to use magazines as disposable items, then go for the plastic ones.

I recently had a chance to look at King Arms plastic M4 magazines at a local store. These plastic magazines have a circular port underneath the magazine. Photo below, taken from the King Arms web site shows the circular port. I was able to turn the cover with a finger nail. My guess is that you can unfasten the cover and pull the spring out to clear the jam.
