I have always wanted to build an airsoft designated marksman rifle (DMR). Here is a video I watched several nights ago that really explains how to do it well and inexpensively. This video shows both external and internal parts. But I like to direct your attention to its internal changes, because you can do whatever you want externally.
Watch the video for now. In the future, I will provide an analysis of the actual stock parts and modified parts based on this video.

So you want to build a DMR? Here is what Brian at Echo1 suggest for the internals...
Stock internal parts: tapper plate, gearbox shell, cylinder (stainless steel), piston, air seal nozzle, gears, ball bearing plastic spring guide.
Brian talks about switching over to a single-piece hop-up. So if your gun comes with a two-piece hop-up, then you should get a one-piece hop-up. Personally, all my AEG's come with one-piece hop-ups, so I consider it a stock part.
The selector plate is stock, but it needs to be modified to be semi-auto only. Now that Echo1 has released the Igor VSS, which is s full-auto sniper rifle in real life, I wonder if rules at airsoft fields will be changing.
Brian shows a stock cylinder. But his stock cylinder is stainless steel. I highly suggest upgrading to a stainless steel cylinder if your stock cylinder is not stainless steel.
The piston is stock, but you need to modify it. The first gear is cut, while the second gear is sanded down. As Brian suggests, no AOE adjustment is necessary.
The spring guide is plastic with metal bearings. All my guns comes with this part as a standard item, as Brian suggests. So you probably don't have to upgrade it. But if yours does not have metal ball bearing, I would suggest an upgrade to relief the higher spring rate stress.
Now for the upgrade parts:
Brian used a MadBull M150 spring to upgrade his DMR. Based on the "Airsoft Spring Power Chart" chart, that should put the gun in the ~500~600 FPS range. Brian claims his gun shoots just shy of 500 FPS. Even though all springs uses the same rating chart, every brand's spring shoots a little differently. Plus, there may be ineffencies in the system that is made up by the stronger spring.
It's pretty obvious that a high torque motor is necessary for a high spring rate build. Brian didn't provide specs other than saying the Echo1 Torque Motor. What's surprising to me is that Brian is using standard gear set (18:1).
It's interesting that Brian shows the stock brass internal barrel in his gun, but he suggests the 6.03mm stainless steel inner barrel. However, I do agree with his suggestion. Having two 6.04mm stainless steel inner barrels in my guns, I can say they are really consistent.
Brian uses an upgraded metal cylinder head with double o-ring. That's pretty smart, because it really seals the cylinder head with the cylinder. And the metal should handle the piston strike well.
Internally to the gearbox, Brian uses 8mm ceramic ball bearings. I have never heard of them. Being 8mm's it means it won't work in many gearboxes. But if your gearbox fix 8mm ceramic ball bearings, I would try them. Otherwise, you'll have to go metal ball bearings.
Finally, Brian uses an 11.1v LiPO battery with Deans connector. Because he's putting so much power through the gun, he also installs a MOSFET.

Title: Things to Know When You Switch to Heavier Airsoft BB
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: I learned a few things when I moved from 0.2g BB's to 0.25g BB's. So I will share what I learned in this thread. 1. Due to the higher mass, the same hop-up setting causes the heavier BB to drop earlier than lighter BB. That means you'll have to adjust the hop-up to hit the same spot at long distance . . .
