Do you guys put lubricant on the bucking? Or do you guys leave it dry?
This past weekend, I had some different experiences with lubricated bucking vs. no-lubricated bucking. The following is what I observed.
My brand new Echo1 Red Star IGOR VSS Vintorez seems to be shooting all over the place. Some times the BB curves down. Some times it curves right. Some times it curves up. Some times it curves left. And some times it hits right on the spot. How can there be so much variation compare to my other well worn M4's? The mock silencer seems solid. The external barrel seems solid. The inner brass barrel seems to be well supported by the external barrel.
I substituted a 363mm stainless steel inner barrel in the gun to eliminate the possibility that the inner brass barrel is flexing due to vibration, but that did not make a difference.
The next item in the system is the hop-up unit. The airsoft rifle comes with transparent hop-up, which really helps me see the inside. And I have been shocked with the amount of oil inside the hop-up. The entire bucking and nub is covered in oil.
That kind of explains the inconsistency. My well-worn M4 have dry bucking. They provide very consistent results. However, they tend to disintegrate over time (see my "Airsoft Troubleshooting #2: AEG Makes Scratchy Sound " article). Rubber is known to crack and fall apart if they are dry. Echo1 may have oiled the rubbing bucking and rubber nub well so that they don't crack as they sit on the retail store shelves.
But if dry bucking makes the airsoft gun more consistent, then I may consider keeping it dry and replacing it more often. The following photo shows the lubricated bucking from the Echo1 Red Star IGOR and the dry bucking from the APS ASR107 M4 URX Raptor. I have not tried the dry bucking in the Echo1 Red Star IGOR yet. That's probably what I'll try next.

Oh yah... I forgot to mention that after seeing the Echo1 bucking being lubricated, I sprayed the dry APS bucking with silicon lubricant and installed it back into the APS ASR107 M4 URX Raptor. Then I tried the gun and it seems to be shooting all over the place too. The APS ASR107 has always been consistent before.

Title: Airsoft Troubleshooting #2: AEG Makes Scratchy Sound
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Last night, I was playing indoor CQB out at TacCity's new Irwindale. In the middle of a game, my APS Mini Patriot M4 started making a weird scratchy sound when it fires. No BB's came out. After I got home, I examined the airsoft electronic gun (AEG). With the magazine out, I fired the gun. Funny thi . . .

Title: Airsoft Troubleshooting #7: AEG Fires Multiple BB's
Weblog: Airsoft SpecOps
Excerpt: One thing that every airsoft player will experience some time during the life of the airsoft electronic gun (AEG) is that it fires multiple BB's. The culprit usually lies in the bucking. You see, it is the bucking that prevents multiple BB's from loading into the hop-up. The circular lip blocks the . . .
