For the Lazy: Maintain Airsoft FPS with a Spring

Just today, I wrote "Clean Your Barrel to Increase FPS". It increased my AEG's FPS by 35 to be exact. And that was not a very thorough clean after six indoor cqb games.

After writing that article, it make me think of ways to keep the FPS high, but doing less maintenance. One theory is to use a stronger spring than the current one in the gun. Leaving the inner barrel greasy and keep the air compression leaks to reduce FPS.

For example, my gun with the current spring initially shoots 330 FPS. After six indoor airsoft nights, it was shooting 260 FPS. Let say I keep the gun as it--not cleaning it, not improving compression. I can put in a stronger spring that brings it up to, say, 350 FPS. And just keep it that way. Wouldn't that work?

Possibly. One drawback is that you can only let dirt and oil build up in your inner barrel before the BB's jam in the gun. So at some point you will have to clean it. But if you go this route, you probably don't want to make it super clean. I guess that would reduce your cleaning chore a bit.

Another drawback is when you go with a stronger spring, you will probably need to beef up many internal parts. For example, you may need a stronger battery. You may need a stronger motor. And you may need reinforced gearbox components. Food for thoughts.
