"Pellet curves downward and flies five feet before hitting the ground on a brand new gun." I see that kind of gripe all the time on airsoft forums. And I recently experienced that myself on my new Cyma CM.023 MP5 airsoft gun. Even when the hop-up is adjusted all the way up, the BB still curves downward. Most folks thinks that's the general trait of low power electronic guns (LPEG). But the truth is with hop-up adjusted to the max, LPEG's will send BB's skyward. This article applies to LPEG's and their more expensive brothers alike.
The hop-up unit is sets the distance that your BB travels. It's purpose is to adjust the friction that the hop-up bucking asserts on the BB. The hop-up bucking is the rubber sleeve that fits over the inner barrel and provides the back-spin on the BB. It is the speed of the back-spin that changes the BB's trajectory. If the back-spin is too fast, the BB travels upward. If the back-spin is too slow, the BB curves down. With the correct back-spin the BB flies straight for a while.
The hop-up unit allow you to change how hard the rubber nub in the hop-up bucking presses down on the BB. With little friction, the back-spin is slow. With more friction, the back-spin is fast. Too much friction may cause the BB to get stuck in the inner barrel.
So what does all that physics tell you if your BB is falling to Earth even when hop-up is set to max? It means your BB does not back-spin fast enough. And that means the hop-up bucking is not providing enough friction even when the hop-up is set to max. There is usually only one cause on a brand new hop-up bucking: oil and grease on the hop-up bucking.
While the rest of the airsoft gun internal should be well lubricated, there should be very little lubrication on the hop-up unit. But because the rest of the gun is well greased, it's inevitable that grease will end up on the hop-up bucking, reducing friction.
When you experience this problem on a fairly new gun, it's time to take your airsoft gun apart and clean the hop-up bucking nub (the part that contacts the BB) with rubbing alcohol. If you are working on an older gun with a worn hop-up bucking, then it's time to replace it. Once you do, you'll find that even the lowest power airsoft gun can send BB's toward the sky.
