Many airsoft electronic guns (AEG), especially entry level high-power electronig guns (HPEG), are advertised to include a battery. Many times, in the fine prints on the product listing, the retailers would disclose the included battery as "test battery". So what does it really mean to get an airsoft test battery with your gun from a practical point-of-view? Let me relay my personal experience with test batteries.
Most of the AEG test batteries that I have gotten with my airsoft guns are 8.4v 1100 mAh NiMH rechargeable battery packs with mini-Tamiya connectors. These batteries works fine with the AEG's that I've gotten them with in my garage and backyard. I can reliably test the gun and sight in the hop-up and the scope.
But when I use them on the airsoft field, they don't last more than one or two game sessions. It turns out most of these test batteries only generate enough current (based on its voltage and capacity rating) to test fire the AEG. Under sustained use, their peak current falls below the threshold of a stock AEG.
I have found that the bare minimum rating of a NiMH battery that could sustain AEG operation on an airsoft field is an 8.4v 1200 mAh NiMH rechargeable battery pack. The best rating that gives you plenty of operational margin is a 9.6v 1600 mAh NiMH battery packs; assuming you don't want to move up to LiPO or LiFePO.
